Today is the 77th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the Day of the nationwide remembrance for its victims. At 3.30 a.m, a mourning ceremony began at the Brest Hero Fortress memorial. Here at dawn on 22 June, 1941, the frontier guards and defenders of the citadel faced the Nazis’ attack. Thousands of people, including foreign delegations from Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, have come to the memorial complex to honor the memory of the fallen, to recall the courage of Soviet soldiers. The key episodes of the assault and defense of the citadel were recreated by about 500 historical re-enactors from 11 countries.
