Marc Chagall is out of the avant-garde. The trendsetter of the Vitebsk art school is presented as an illustrator of the Holy Scriptures at the Center for Contemporary Arts. The exposition includes over 60 lithographs that artistically frame the events of the Old Testament. Chagall turned not only to the "Book of Books", he also created "Windows of Jerusalem" series of religious sketches for the stained-glass windows of the synagogue of the Hadass Medical Center in Jerusalem. Biblical stories were put together into a single narrative literally one by one from private European collections. In order to visualize the Old Testament plots in graphic printing technique, Chagall had to master the language of lithography, while a pilgrimage to the holy places of Palestine, Syria and Egypt helped him compose artistic puzzles into a single picture.
