Radioactive waste management – under control!
The national operator will control the management of radioactive waste. A resolution of the Ministry of Energy was adopted on the establishment of a republican unitary enterprise "Belarusian Organization for the Management of Radioactive Waste". As the head of the Ministry of Energy noted, the creation of the enterprise is due to the need to create in Belarus a system for long-term storage and disposal of radioactive waste generated throughout the country. This is not only the Belarusian nuclear power plant, but also healthcare, industry, science and other industries that use sources of ionizing radiation. At the first stage, specialists will have to study the world experience and existing technologies for radioactive waste management, work out possible options for locating sites for the republican radioactive waste storage facility, carry out surveys and assess their impact on the environment, and hold public hearings. This will be followed by work on the design and construction of the facility. The first stage of the republican radioactive waste storage facility is planned to be built by 2030.
