Today the Apostle’s fast starts. It prepares Christians for the Day of the Apostles Peter and Paul, which is celebrated on July 12. The Apostle’s fast t is not as strict as the Great Fast. Dry food is consumed only on Wednesdays and Fridays, and on Mondays people eat hot food without butter. Fish, mushrooms and cereals are eaten in the remaining days. It is necessary to refrain from eating meat, dairy products and eggs. Among the people the Apostle’s fast was nicknamed "Petrovki" or "Petrovka-hunger-strike": in the beginning of the summer there was very little left from the last harvest, and the new one was still far away.
