One of the bloody pages of history that cannot be forgotten was the massacre of Jews in Disna. Today the 80th anniversary of the tragedy is marked: on June 14, 1942, the German Nazis killed at least 3,800 civilians. Before the war, more than half of the Disna population had been Jews. With the German occupation, a ghetto was organized there. On that day, a crowd of people was driven to the place of execution. Those who tried to escape were shot by machine-gun fire. On a sandy wasteland, people were forced to dig two ditches 60 meters long – they became mass graves. According to the memoirs of local dwellers, by the evening of June 14, both trenches were filled with bodies. Today, a meeting-requiem was held at the site of the tragedy. Local residents, representatives of authorities and public organizations, schoolchildren and students gathered to honor the memory of the victims of fascism.
