Meeting of Council of Elders held at Council of Republic

The draft of the new Constitution of Belarus was discussed during a meeting of the Council of Elders under the Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus with the participation of Speaker of the Upper House of Parliament Natalya Kochanova. The Chairperson of the Council of the Republic recalled that a Constitutional Commission was set up by the Presidential Decree, whose tasks are to amend the Basic Law of the country. Eight meetings of the commission have already taken place. Among the goals of the new Constitution is the preservation of territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence. The draft Constitution with proposals from citizens, collectives and officials will be submitted for consideration to the Head of State by August 1. To collect proposals, the Council of the Republic also works a lot with the population in the regions and organizes visiting sessions. It is planned that the updated Constitution will be submitted for a referendum early next year.
