Cross Procession honoring Zhirovichy icon of Mother of God

The Pan-Belarusian Cross Procession honoring the Zhirovichy icon of the Mother of God is going on. Today, the believers worshiped one of the main Orthodox relics in the Holy Assumption cathedral in a regional center Vitebsk. The Zhirovichy icon of the Mother of God is one of the most hallowed sacred items in Belarus. It appeared on a stone by the village of Zhirovichy late XV century. This year, 550 years since the icon appeared to people is marked, while the shrine where it is kept marks 500 years. From Vitebsk, the icon will travel to the town of Polotsk. By the Erection of the Holy Cross holiday it will come to Minsk.
