Expanding the visa-free zone of the Augustow Canal by including railway connections and air flights from the Grodno airport is the idea voiced by experts during the meeting of the Belarusian-Polish working group on the Canal's promotion. Since the introduction of the visa-free regime the Augustow Canal and the Grodno district were visited by over 26 thousand tourists from 55 countries. A bilateral project is being discussed to allow local residents to provide tourist services on both sides of the Canal. Another joint initiative is the inclusion of the Augustow Canal into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
