The monument was unveiled in the 5th
Regiment memorial complex. The event united representatives of local authorities, procuracy, labour collectives, youth, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and clergymen. The author of the monument is Vitebsk sculptor Ivan Kazak. His work "Tree of Life" was selected following the results of the contest, initiated by the General Procuracy. Such monuments will appear in every region of the country. They have already been installed in Gomel, Brest and Grodno. The opening of the memorials is a tribute of memory to the prisoners of war and civilians, who were tortured and killed by the fascists and their accomplices. During the Great Patriotic War more than 12.000 Belarusian villages were burnt together with their inhabitants. In the list of villages that shared the fate of Khatyn, 170 were located in Vitebsk region.
