8 September is the Memorial Day of the victims of the siege of Leningrad. Commemorative events dedicated to this date were held in Minsk. Representatives of the public association "Defenders and Residents of Besieged Leningrad", schoolchildren, students, and caring Belarusians gathered to honor the memory of the victims of German aggression and lay wreaths and flowers at the monument on the capital's Victory Square. The siege of the city on the Neva River began on 8 September 1941 and lasted for a long 872 days. Fewer than 70 witnesses of those terrible events now live in Minsk.
