A visit to the Chernobyl-affected areas at the end of April is an important tradition for the Belarusian President. The head of state also looks into the issues of development of certain towns and the Gomel region as a whole. For instance, the President familiarized himself with the system that has been set up to repair and restore used equipment. The head of state was keen to know how well equipped the local dairy farms were. The Belarusian President also paid special attention to local administration’s discipline. Aleksandr Lukashenko encouraged speeding up land reclamation as it is progressing very slowly. In Vetka the head of state visited the Church of Transfiguration, where he lit a candle and laid flowers at the memorial sign to the settlements that ceased to exist due to the Chernobyl tragedy. Aleksandr Lukashenko also talked to local residents.
