Before you is a real miracle of nature – a unique chain of lakes, which are located in the territory of the largest natural national park of Belarus – Braslav Lakes. Local guides say that you can drink water here straight from the lake! All thanks to the amazing qualities of blue clay. Even avid travelers compare the Braslav region with Finland and Switzerland!
The origin of this place is surprising: about 18 millennia ago, instead of lakes, there was ice on an area of 70,000 hectares. It was several metres thick. When the glacier receded, the water gradually melted and formed a complex system of rivers and lakes. This is how the present-day Braslav Lakes were formed!
In another way, they are also called the blue necklace of Belarus. So, there are almost 300 peculiar pearls in it: equally beautiful, but very different! This is the largest lake region of “the blue-eyed country”. It includes a lot of things marked “the most”.
For example, the largest lake called Drivyaty. It is 10 kilometres long and almost 4 kilometres wide! During the warm months of the year you can take a boat ride on it – almost like on the sea. There are also many small and large Belarusian islands. For instance, Lake Strusto is unique. Here you can catch a metre-long pike of 10 kg!
Not far away is the second largest island in Belarus - Chaychin. This is the home of a large colony of seagulls!
In general, 200 species of birds live in the Braslav Lakes National Park. Among the local birds, the mute swan is particularly renowned. Besides, more than 800 different plant species grow here. Some of them are included in the Red Book.
If you are in these regions, we recommend visiting the deepest lake in the country, the South Voloso Lake. Its depth reaches more than forty metres. Notably, the water transparency varies up to eight metres. The place, amazing in its beauty and purity, has long been popular among locals.
The Braslav Lakes National Park and the neighbouring territories are rich in attractions. Among them, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a church located near Zamkova Hill, stands out. It was built in 1897 in the Romanesque Revival style.
Another ornament of these places is the white stone the Church of divine Providence, which is valued for its iron door fittings made with plant motifs and the brightly painted interior of the church.
And on Lake Nespish lies the Island of Klyashtor, which used to be the site of a monastery. According to legend, it was built thanks to Marian apparitions.
Braslav Lakes is not just a National Park. It is a place of strength, a “mecca” for holidaymakers in Belarus. The landscapes are incredible and attractive: so much exoticism, mystery, expression, and at the same time universal peace. Especially if you look at them from a bird's eye view!
