The first Olympic champion from Belarus Sergei Makarenko turned 80. At this age he is still actively involved in sports. The National Olympic Committee awarded the sportsman with the medal of the NOC «For outstanding services in the development of the Olympic movement in Belarus». In 1960, at the Olympic Games in Rome, Sergei Makarenko together with Leonid Geishtor won gold at 1000 meters in kayaking and canoeing.
