Gomel celebrates the anniversary of its liberation from Nazi invaders
26.11.2025
Gomel is celebrating the 82nd anniversary of its liberation from the Nazi invaders. This was the first regional center of Belarus to be liberated from the occupiers by Soviet troops in the autumn of 1943. The city remained under enemy control for 829 days. During the months of occupation, more than 80% of Gomel was destroyed, and almost all of its industry was destroyed. However, the city did not surrender, and during the Gomel-Rechitsa Offensive Operation, the enemy was routed. Soviet troops took advantageous positions on the right bank of the Dnieper River. Monumental works of art on the walls of buildings commemorate the heroes' legendary feat. The gallery of murals honoring the heroic liberators has been expanded with new symbols of remembrance.
