God's Transfiguration Church in Novogrudok to get status of sanctuary
19.07.2018
The shrine, where prominent Belarusian and Polish poet Adam Mitskevich was baptized will get an official sanctuary status. The God's Transfiguration Catholic Church in Novogrudok is one of the oldest in Belarus. It's history started 6 centuries ago, in the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was a spiritual shelter for thousands of people and a stronghold in the times of war. Its architecture has elements of different epochs – Gothics and Baroque. It was built by prince Vitovt. The relics of 11 blessed Novogrudok martyrs are deposited there. Thousands of believers come annually to worship them. This was the reason to render the sanctuary status to the Novogrudok church.
