Monument to pilot A. Mamkin, who saved 200 Belarusian children, unveiled in Minsk
The preservation of historical memory is a link between generations and a common pride. It is symbolic that during the Forum of the Regions of Belarus and Russia, a monument to A. Mamkin, a legendary pilot who became a national hero of the two nations, was unveiled in Minsk. In 1944, together with his comrades, he transported about 200 orphans of the Polotsk orphanage to the rear. The pilot's 75th flight was his last. Burning to death, he landed the downed plane on the liberated territory. 10 children, two wounded partisans and a teacher — all survived. But the hero himself died. A. Mamkin had no children of his own, but at the age of 27 he became a father to all the rescued. The feat of the pilot on Belarusian soil sealed the fraternal peoples with bonds of sacred memory, opening a new page in the annals of the common history of the Union State.
