On January 24, 1939, the State Art Gallery of the BSSR – the future National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus – opened in Minsk. The basis of the gallery's collection at that time was made up of works from the historical museums of Minsk, Vitebsk, Mogilev and Gomel, canvases donated by the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the State Hermitage Museum. Later, the collection was supplemented with curiosity from manors and castles of Western Belarus, including the residence of the Princes Radziwills in Nesvizh.
